SIMPLY ASTONISHING. I've been following, on and off, Kevin Brownlow's project to restore Abel Gance's 90-year-old silent masterpiece for most of my life (or so it seems). I've only seen a few excerpts. The full film is finally ready and here's the trailer. It's astounding. Five and a half hours, breathless editing, restless camera work, and the celebrated battle scene using a three-camera triptych. We'll plan a full screening in Penang next year!
Abel Gance was a French film director and producer, writer and actor. A pioneer in the theory and practice of montage, he is best known for three major silent films: J'accuse, La Roue, and the monumental Napoléon. Wikipedia
