In memory of Honoré de Balzac, who died on this day, 1850

The Human Comedy, a selection by Peter Brooks of nine short works by Honoré de Balzac, might well serve as a point of entry into a body of work that, however central to literary studies, seems increasingly neglected

您的肖像是本書最美的點綴;

“If I'd had a man of my own, I'd have followed him . . . down to hell.”
―from EUGENIE GRANDET (1833) by Honoré de Balzac
This is a painfully drawn portrayal of private life, but its wider subject-matter also makes it a fictional document of post-revolutionary France. Many people (among them Henry James) have considered Balzac to be the greatest of all novelists. EUGENIE GRANDET, his spare, classical story of a girl whose life is blighted by her father's hysterical greed, goes a long way to justifying that opinion. One of the most magnificent of his tales of early nineteenth-century French provincial life, this novel is the work of a writer on whom nothing was lost, and who represents most fully the ability of the human animal to understand and illuminate its own condition. Translated By Ellen Marriage With An Introduction By Fredric R. Jameson. READ more here: http://knopfdoubleday.com/book/8075/eugenie-grandet/
