Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn《

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn - 2015 - ‎Fiction
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Station. How have you kept alive! Hunger and fury involuntarily tightened his jaws as he glared Volga-fashion at this ... But every other train, it seemed, was more urgent than their damned load and its frozen grease.

He was not another Tolstoy or Dostoevsky. Often the characters in Mr Solzhenitsyn's books were one-dimensional, the tone sardonic, the detail turgid. But his indestructibility gave him, over the years, a prophet's voice

“In our village, folks say God crumbles up the old moon into stars.”
—Alexander Solzhenitsyn, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

“Can a man who's warm understand one who's freezing?”

--from "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

"A genius doesn't adjust his treatment of a theme to a tyrant's taste."
--from "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
One of the most chilling novels about the oppression of totalitarian regimes and the first to open Western eyes to the terrors of Stalin's prison camps; if Solzhenitsyn later became Russia's conscience in exile, this is the book with which he first challenged the brutal might of the Soviet Union.
