This photograph shows Baron Ferdinand Rothschild dressed as a Renaissance prince in about 1865. The elaborate fancy dress worn by the Baron, who donated the Waddesdon Bequest to the British Museum, includes a large velvet cap adorned with a Renaissance-style hat jewel. Legend has it that hat badges like this were popularised by the French king Charles VIII when in 1495 he and his men entered Naples wearing them. They regained popularity among 19th-century collectors (and forgers!)
