He received his PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge in 1961. Harvey authored many books and essays that have been prominent in the development of modern geography as a discipline. On that basis, the books of Harvey were cited 723 times in 2007.[2] In a study of the most-cited academic geographers in four English-speaking countries between 1984 and 1988, Harvey ranked first.[3]
